10 Basic Car Maintenance Tips That Can Save You Money
Posted by: Baypress - 01-01-2022, 01:14 AM - Forum: News & Investment Deals - No Replies

New and used car prices are at record highs. One way to save money on buying a new (or new-to-you) car is to prolong the life of your existing vehicle. Or, if you plan to sell your vehicle, proper car maintenance will increase its resale value. Routine oil changes are a no-brainer, but there are additional routine maintenance measures that can easily be overlooked. That’s why we compiled this handy list of basic car maintenance tips that can improve the quality and reliability of your car and save you money in the long run.
Here are 10 simple things that can have long-term effects on your car’s reliability. While this isn't a comprehensive list, it highlights some of the most overlooked car maintenance items that can help cut down on unnecessary car repair expenses and keep your car running smoothly.
1. Wash Your Car Regularly
[Image: 820e82c08629abb57cbb5e287b3209eb]
While it’s tempting to just rely on nature’s car wash, regular rain showers shouldn’t be your preferred method of washing your car. Unwashed dirt can lead to scratches or chips and can even fade your car’s color. Regular exposure to the elements, especially salt in winter, can also damage a vehicle’s paint and lead to damaging rust on your car’s undercarriage.
2. Check Your Battery
[Image: c8e6730952e8fd01162972af59280f43]
A car battery lasts an average of two to five years. You can prolong the life of your battery by following some basic maintenance tips. You should check your battery annually and keep an eye out for warning signs that indicate your battery is nearing the end of its lifespan. These include dim headlights and a car that is slow to start or won’t start at all. You can test your car’s voltage with a voltage meter that can be found at automotive parts stores or online. A battery that registers at 12.39 volts or less is considered discharged.
You can revive your vehicle by giving it a jump start if you left your lights on, but having to regularly jump your battery is a sign it needs to be left on a battery charger for at least 24 hours. If after that your battery still won’t reliably start your vehicle, you likely need a replacement, though a test of your car’s charging system should also be performed. This can be done at almost any automotive shop for a minimal cost (less than $40).
You should also check your car battery's terminals to make sure the connections are clean and free of debris buildup. Also make sure the wires from the connectors are tight and without frays or breaks.
3. Replace Your Air Filters
Air is drawn into your vehicle through its intake, where it’s filtered and directed to the engine’s combustion chambers. If anything interrupts this flow of air, the engine will sputter or stall.
Most cars have at least one particulate filter for the air that is being sent into the engine for combustion. That engine air filter requires regular cleaning or replacement. Replacement is nearly always the better option. Rarely does a “lifetime” filter actually last the life of the car. Most air filters require replacement about every two oil changes, depending on the climate, contamination, and air quality where you live. Filters are cheap enough that more frequent changes are better.
Other filters that are important to your vehicle’s operation are fuel and oil filters. Use only quality filters or insist that only quality (preferably OEM) filters be used. Your owner’s manual will have specific intervals for oil and fuel filter replacements. Follow these manufacturer’s recommendations rigidly.
4. Check Fluid Levels Regularly
[Image: 2155e655f058f97fd85b2bcf332fc02d]
The fluids in your vehicle include engine oil, windshield washer fluid, grease, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and likely transmission fluid. Some engines may have other fluids as well, such as diesel exhaust after-treatment.
All of these fluids have some way to access their fill level, so you’ll know how much is in there. Most also have a way to determine how clean the fluid is. Motor oil and transmission fluid are accessed with dipsticks located inside the engine compartment. Those sticks should be marked with “hot” and “cold” indicators to show where levels should be if the engine is hot (at operating temperature) or cold. These should be checked regularly. Failure to maintain your car’s oil can void your warranty and lead to premature engine failure.
Windshield washer fluid is held in a reservoir that is usually visibly accessible from under the hood. Fill levels are generally assessed by looking at the filler spout or reservoir and viewing the fluid seen through the semi-opaque container. It’s difficult to over-fill this reservoir, so when in doubt, add more fluid.
Brake fluid is easily accessible from underneath the hood as well. The reservoir is usually located directly on top of the brake master cylinder, which is almost always on the firewall (back wall of the engine compartment) directly in front of the driver. Do not open this reservoir unless you are adding fluid. If you are low on brake fluid, there's a reason it’s dropping and that reason needs to be found and resolved immediately. Your brakes are your car’s primary safety item. Never neglect them.
Radiator coolant should also be checked regularly to make sure your level of coolant reaches the maximum fill line. This is important because your car can overheat if it doesn’t have enough coolant. Your radiator and coolant reservoir can be found under your car’s hood, and it is usually in a small transparent tank.
Grease is a different matter. Most of the time there's no easy to way to access grease points on your car. Some of them may even require partial disassembly of parts to access. Pay attention to your owner’s manual and its recommendation for greasing components on your vehicle. Then stick to those intervals. A large number of failures to mechanical components on a car are due to a lack of lubrication.
5. Check Your Wheels and Tires
[Image: c105499e91e385693bf68335c869299d]
Tire pressure directly affects tread life, safety, and fuel economy. Yet few people remember to check their tires' pressure regularly. Some newer cars now have tire pressure sensors built into them, which display the tire pressure on the dashboard and provide a warning when it’s low.
For the rest of us, checking tire pressures at every fuel fill or on a weekly routine requires more diligence. But it should be done. Look at the sticker located inside your driver’s door for the recommended air pressure, which will usually fall between 32 and 35 psi on most passenger vehicles. Tires that aren’t properly inflated can lower your gas mileage, lead to increased wear, or even lead to a tire blowout and potential crash.
Tread wear is another important factor. The less tread you have, the less grip your tires will provide, especially during quick maneuvers or hard stops during inclement weather. Tire tread depth should be well above the indicator bars built into the tread. When your tires begin to get close, get them replaced. Refer to our guide to understand the dangers of bald tires and to see if your tires have adequate tread.
Finally, the wheels on which those tires are mounted should also get routine inspections. Your regular tire rotation schedule is generally every other oil change or every 5,000 to 6,000 miles. (Check your owner’s manual.) It's a great time to have your wheels inspected. Cracks, big dents, etc. should be noted and are cause for concern. Replace them as necessary.
You should also make sure you have a spare tire handy and that it’s properly inflated.
6. Check Your Windshield Wipers
Did you know that windshield wiper blades should be replaced every six to 12 months? If you didn’t, chances are that you should probably change your wiper blades. If you hear a screech when your windshield wipers are activated, or if they leave streaks on your windshield, then it’s time for replacement blades. Properly maintaining your windshield wipers will help ensure that you have maximum visibility in the event of a snow or rainstorm. Wiper blades can be purchased at an auto parts store.
7. Check Your Brakes
[Image: 9adee5de3cfc6a85f3417e71c1c7841a]
Properly maintaining your brakes can help keep you safe while also prolonging the life of your vehicle. You can determine if it’s time to have your brakes checked by listening for telltale signs and by completing a visual inspection.
Be sure to listen for these common brake sounds that can indicate when maintenance is needed.

  • Scraping - This happens when brake pads are worn out and are rubbing against the rotor.
  • Rattling - This suggests that one of the rotors needs to be replaced.
  • Vibrating- A vibrating noise at the brake pedal is another indicator your brakes require maintenance.
You can also observe your brake pad to gauge its remaining thickness. If the pad appears to be less than ¼ inch, it likely needs to be replaced. Your brake pads may have a wear indicator in the center, which will show you when they need to be replaced.
8. Examine Belts and Hoses
This goes beyond routine vehicle maintenance, but inspecting the hoses and belts in the engine bay can help prevent engine damage. Check hoses to see if they have separated or if they show signs of wear like cracking or bulging. If any of those conditions are present, they need to be replaced.
Follow the same process for the belts in your vehicle. Your car’s serpentine belt is one of the most important parts of your car and assists with the timing of many important car parts, like the air conditioning condenser, alternator, water pump, and power steering.
Older models may use multiple belts to run engine accessories, and these are typically made of rubber that will wear over time. If any of these belts show signs of wear like cracking, glazing, or if pieces are missing, it needs to be replaced.
One critical belt you can’t easily inspect is the timing belt, which controls the engine’s valvetrain. A recommended timing belt replacement interval will be listed in the owner’s manual, and it should be followed closely to avoid potentially very costly engine damage.
9. Don’t Neglect Your Check Engine Light
[Image: 0eb65bc404a522a4087fc6bafa6d3665]
There are many reasons for your Check Engine Light to make its unwelcome appearance. To diagnose what’s triggering your check engine light, you can retrieve the codes by using an OBD-II scanner. This can be done by a mechanic, or you can purchase a code reader from an auto parts store. Even if you use your own code reader to see what may be causing the problem, you should still get the problem diagnosed by a professional. Ignoring a check engine light can lead to more costly repairs down the road and can also present a safety hazard.
10. Read Your Owner’s Manual
You don’t have to read it cover to cover, but at the very least you should keep it handy and refer to it often. Your owner’s manual will provide you with a maintenance schedule that will let you know when parts of your vehicle need to be serviced.
Bottom Line
Car maintenance is an important part of vehicle ownership. While regular maintenance may seem expensive, it’s far more cost-effective than the costly repairs you’re likely to incur if you don’t follow these easy steps.

It’s an age-old question that most moms will face at some point: SUV or minivan; which one works best for my growing family?
Start this convo at moms’ night out, and it can get pretty polarizing. As a mom working in the automotive industry, I’ve had this conversation with fellow parents so many times, and for good reason. Parents need particular things when it comes to toting their families around.
And even if you know absolutely nothing about cars, it’s pretty apparent that SUVs and minivans remain two of the most efficient types of vehicles for hauling people and cargo. (One look at an elementary school carpool line will give that away.)
However, when you start to dig a little deeper, you quickly realize that these two options differ in price, style, features, and capability. That’s why it’s essential to truly understand the differences before picking the best vehicle for your family.
Choosing between an SUV and a minivan really depends on your budget, demands, and lifestyle.
Be sure to read: This popular family car has earned top-notch safety ratings
Similarities between SUVs and minivans
At first glance, you may not think SUVs and minivans have much in common, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Interior technology
To start, both have excellent interior technology: Most current models have all the latest must-haves, like rear-seat entertainment systems, Apple AAPL, -0.35% CarPlay, Android Auto, and surround-view cameras, which is my favorite mom car feature of all time (game-changer for parking in a tight preschool parking lot!). And in today’s connected climate, most SUVs and minivans also come with more than one rear USB port, which means more access for mom (and surly teens) to recharge mobile devices.
Safety technology
Since car makers designed both SUVs and minivans to be family-friendly vehicles, they usually come equipped with the most up-to-date safety technology. Features like lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and collision avoidance systems help give parents the peace of mind they need when hauling around their most precious cargo.
Both types of vehicles also tend to have decent driving performance and handling, and they typically have similar fuel economy and other costs.

So, if SUVs and minivans are that similar, how on earth does a mom decide between them? Read on to understand the differences and nuances of each vehicle type.
Minivan
Ask any mom the difference between an SUV and a minivan, and I guarantee the first thing she’ll say is something about looks. Let’s just address the elephant in the room and get it out of the way: Minivans do not look sleek or sexy.
See: [url=https://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-5-best-minivans-for-your-kids-pets-travel-and-gear-2020-06-16?mod=article_inline]The 5 best minivans for your kids, pets, travel and gear
There’s a major stigma that still exists around minivans, and I know this because I talk to moms weekly about it. It’s not unusual for me to hear a mom say, “You couldn’t pay me to drive a minivan,” which I think has to do with the cool factor (or lack thereof) that comes with driving a perceived mom-mobile. My response is always the same: “I totally get it, but trust me when I tell you that one day behind the wheel of a minivan will completely change your mind.”
Minivan pros
  • Cost. On average, minivans cost less than 3-row SUVs (of course, this doesn’t include higher-end models), which is a definite check in the minivan column.
  • Space — and more space. Minivans typically offer more space than the average three-row SUV, with about five additional inches of legroom on average in the third row. That’s a big deal if you have a large family, older teens, and/or typically drive around with multiple generations (you don’t want grandma cramped in the back).
  • Accessibility. Now, let’s talk about the number one feature that makes a minivan so amazing: sliding rear doors. Any mom with little kids knows the struggle of an independent toddler insisting on getting into the car all by himself…and 10 minutes plus a few gray hairs later, most moms would do just about anything to make that process quicker and easier. Enter the sliding door with a lower step-in height than most SUVs, giving you (and your tiny dictator) easy access to enter and exit the vehicle. That’s helpful for grandparents or other family members with mobility challenges, too. And tight parking spaces are a breeze with that sliding door. Honestly, it’s a huge plus that often gets overlooked.
  • User-friendly tech. Another plus for minivans is that interior technology tends to be more family- and passenger-oriented. For example, the Toyota Sienna offers a whopping seven USB ports. And the Chrysler Pacifica provides dual rear-seat entertainment touchscreens with a Blu-ray player, wireless headphones, and tons of cool apps, and educational games (my 3-year-old learned how to play solitaire in the Pacifica — no judging, please), all of which make road trips a million times more palatable. Finally, minivans typically have more cargo space than SUVs, especially with the seats folded down.

Minivan cons
Minivans are sounding pretty good right about now. So why wouldn’t you get one? We’ll tell you about the cons — read on.
  • Ground clearance. First of all, they don’t offer a whole lot of ground clearance compared with SUVs. They’re also not great in extreme weather or off-road conditions, so you need to consider your typical driving environment and terrain.
  • Towing capacity. Another factor to consider is that the highest maximum towing capacity of any minivan is 3,600 pounds. So, if your family vehicle is required to tow a boat or a trailer, an SUV might be a better bet for you.
  • Size. Minivans are big vehicles with a large external footprint. I remember getting behind the wheel of one for the first time and feeling like I was driving a boat (that feeling does not last, FYI).
  • Fuel efficiency (with an asterisk). Most minivans are not particularly fuel-efficient, though there are two different hybrid minivan options on the market today (the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid and the Toyota Sienna).
[*]TIP: Almost every minivan on the market is going through changes over the next couple of years. When a new model comes out, that’s a great time to look at the previous generation, as dealers are typically more willing to discount older models.
But be aware: Minivans are literally the hottest-selling vehicles in America at the moment, so finding available inventory could be a challenge. Have patience, and start looking long before you actually need that new car.
Also on MarketWatch: Fauci says the best way to protect kids is to make sure adults around them are fully vaccinated
SUV
Despite minivans’ moment in the spotlight, more SUVs get bought in this country than cars and trucks combined. Moms are responsible for a large portion of those SUV sales.
If you have a smaller family (maybe just one or two kiddos), you might not need all that extra minivan square footage. A compact or midsize SUV could be the perfect fit for those families.
See: Cars, trucks, SUVs and minivans: 18 best buys
Alternatively, if you haul a huge crew, several full-size SUV options could offer up even more space than a minivan. And if aesthetics are nonnegotiable for you, you’ll likely gravitate toward the overall sportier, sleeker look of an SUV.
SUV pros
  • More options. There are so many more SUV options on the market than minivans, giving parents seemingly endless (albeit slightly overwhelming) options for all budgets and lifestyles.
  • Hybrid and electric options. SUVs offer tons of different hybrid and electric options if that’s of importance to you.
  • Better visibility. SUVs also tend to offer a taller ride height and higher ground clearance than minivans and stellar visibility, which can help moms feel more confident at the wheel.
  • Elevated safety features. You’ll find that SUVs typically offer slightly elevated safety features beyond the typical crash avoidance systems. For example, the Toyota Highlander offers a gauge cluster seat belt indicator telling you who buckled up and who did not. This feature comes in handy so you don’t have to rely on your testy tweens to tell you whether they buckled or not. Necessary? No. But certainly nice to have.
  • Tech amenities. SUVs also tend to offer interior tech amenities that are more focused on the overall driving experience. Likely not a mom’s number one priority, but a smooth, comfortable ride is definitely a plus.
  • Handling. Another pro for SUVs is that they are available with either all-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive, which means they’ll have much better handling when on rough terrain or in stormy weather.
  • Towing capacity. If towing is a must for your family, some large SUVs surpass the towing capacity of even the best compact pickup trucks and can tow over 9,000 pounds, which means you can pull a much larger trailer or a large boat with ease.

The Toyota Highlander has a seat belt indicator telling you who buckled up and who did not.
Toyota
SUV cons
  • Less space. If space is top on your list of priorities, minivans hold more than 15 extra inches of space than the average 3-row midsize SUV. There’s typically less overall cargo space with the third-row in use compared with a minivan.
  • Fuel efficiency. And SUVs are not very fuel-efficient unless you go with an environmentally friendly EV or hybrid model.
  • Bigger environmental footprint. In addition, SUVs require more resources to manufacture than smaller vehicles. This means that SUV production contributes to climate change and environmental degradation on a larger scale than other vehicle choices (unless you go with an electric SUV option, of course).
  • No captain’s seats. If you’re buying used, you’re less likely to find an SUV with captain’s seats than a minivan equipped that way. This is a significant factor for parents with more than one child in a convertible car seat (rear and forward-facing). Captain’s seats are a must in this situation for access to the third row.
[*]TIP: My number one piece of car shopping advice to parents with two or more small children in car seats is to avoid the second-row bench at all costs. Wait until at least one child is in a booster seat to go for the bench.
Read: The 2022 Kia Sorento Hybrid is great for families and starts below $34,000
Overall, SUVs offer a much wider scope of changes than minivans over the next couple of years. That means there will be many more older models with better deals to choose from. And SUVs tend to see technological advancements sooner than minivans, so if having the latest and greatest tech is important to you, or if you have off-road or towing needs, a 3-row SUV is probably your best bet.
SUV vs. minivan: the results
The bottom line? As a parent, you really can’t go wrong with either a minivan or an SUV. You’ll have plenty of space for kids and cargo, not to mention endless cup holders for mommy’s daily caffeine fix. It all comes down to budget, lifestyle, aesthetic preferences, and priorities. As you narrow down your choices, I highly recommend asking for an extended test drive to see how the car in question works for your daily life.

Wink I’ll have $5 million for retirement when I sell my dental practice next year — but my
Posted by: Baypress - 12-23-2021, 12:11 AM - Forum: New Homes For Sale in Florida. ( Best Deals) - No Replies

Dear MarketWatch,

[Image: im-456776?width=700&size=1.5005861664712778]

I am a 60-year-old dentist. My wife is 56. I have been very diligent in working toward my plan to retire at 61 and am ahead of the game. My $750,000 home is fully paid for, as is my $450,000 vacation condo. I will have at least $5 million in a combination of retirement funds and nonqualified investments when I retire at the end of 2022 and sell the other half of my practice to my business partner. Much of what I have in my qualified plans is in a Roth. I have zero business or personal debt. My wife has not had to work, and she has a very comfortable life. We have two daughters — one 30-year-old, married with a 4-month-old and working as a dental hygienist for me, and the other a single 26-year-old fully employed nurse who is currently living with us but will be moving out once the housing market cools a bit. I have helped out both financially, but they would do fine without my help.
Sounds great, right? Yet my family is giving me a hard time about retiring. I thought that they would be happy for me when I announced my retirement date. I am an avid golfer and outdoors person who will have zero qualms about keeping busy when I retire. My wife and I are very healthy. I have taken my wife to talk to my financial adviser, and he went over all of our finances. We discussed a future budget and anything that she feels that she would like to see in our future financially. I will be taking a large pay cut when I retire, but we will still have at least $200,000 per year at 4% of funds, which is at least $70,000 over our needs based on the projected budget. I am OK spending more in my 60s if needed as I am sure to be spending less in my 70s and 80s as I slow down. I plan to sit on my Social Security until 70.
I really don’t think that this is about me not bringing home as much money and helping out the kids, because they will do fine without my help. I feel that they are being selfish in that they just don’t want a retired dad and husband. My job is not who I am, but I feel that for them it is a part of who they are, and my wife and daughters are having a hard time dealing with that.
I would like to spend winters in Florida and join a golf club. I would be happy just renting for a month or two (or three) in Florida each winter until we find something that works for us to own. My feeling about my wife’s giving me a hard time about retiring is that she does not want to face that future. My retiring forces her to think about getting out of her comfort zone and not being around our two daughters who live in the area. I have seen this coming for years but figured that as she got older it would not be an issue, yet here we are.
I can’t be the first person to have to deal with this, so how do you recommend that I go from here as I enter my final year of work?
See: I’m a 35-year-old father of four with $135,000 saved for retirement. We’ve always lived paycheck to paycheck. ‘What am I doing wrong?’
Dear reader,
I’m sorry to hear about your frustrations — especially considering how much you’ll have saved for retirement when you leave your job and how remarkable a feat that is for your future.
Retirement can be an emotional time, usually for individuals leaving the workforce who have felt their careers defined much of who they are, but sometimes also for the retiring person’s family. In some cases, it causes concern over how to pay the bills when shifting to a fixed budget, while for others, as you suggested, it could be about stepping into the unknown.

Your wife may have a lot of feelings associated with your retirement, and it’s important to keep her in the loop every step of the way, as you seem to have done so far. Couples need to plan for the nonfinancial aspects of retirement just as much as the financial. You mentioned that your wife’s disapproval of your retirement might have something to do with being away from the children. If that’s the case, discuss with her what you hope to do in retirement — and what she hopes you both do during that time, as well.
If she doesn’t want to spend so much time in Florida, how would you split your time? Would you be able to find activities closer to home that you would be happy to trade off occasionally for your golf? Aside from the quality of life she’ll have, are there any activities she would love to pursue that you could support? You won’t have to spend all of your time together, even if she’s not working and you’re retired. “It is really important to think about how you’ll spend your retirement days — especially as a couple,” said Catherine Valega, a certified financial planner and founder of Green Bee Advisory. “Both partners should have their own activities, as well as some joint activities.”
Check out the MarketWatch column Retirement Hacks for actionable pieces of advice for your own retirement savings journey.
We could ask ourselves a million questions about why your wife and kids may be acting the way they are, but you’ll only get down to it with clear, concise and meaningful communication. This might be a hard topic to discuss, especially if you’re disappointed in their reactions, but do your best to sit down with them and get to the bottom of it. You may have to be very blunt and ask them straight out what exactly makes them unhappy about your decision to retire. Are they worried about the bills? Are they maybe worried about you, and how you’ll adapt to retirement when you’re not as busy? Is it really just nervousness about this next chapter in life? “All are valid concerns, and the identification of the main issue will help determine the appropriate steps to get everyone on the same page,” said Alec Quaid, a certified financial planner at American Portfolios Denver.

You mentioned your wife has met with your financial adviser to discuss the future budget, but if your children are also giving you a hard time and they’re worried about the finances, you could consider bringing them in to meet with your adviser, too. Sometimes it helps to have an unbiased third party facilitating the conversation, Quaid said. Of course, your children don’t make the decisions about your retirement — but if you’re worried about their reaction to your retirement, it’s one way to potentially fix that problem.
Another option is therapy. With so many emotions, concerns and hard feelings, you might find some relief talking to a therapist with your loved ones — sometimes therapists can unlock money issues, too.
Read: A couple who earns $220,000 a year with almost no debt thinks they never have enough — how can they see things differently?
You might also want to try a retirement “test drive,” said Jeffrey Golden, a certified financial adviser at Circle Advisers. Take a couple of weeks off and follow a schedule as you’d see fit in retirement. Include your family in the process. This could help solidify your own personal goals for retirement (maybe you don’t actually want to live in Florida three months out of every year) but also show them what it could be like, how happy it would make you and how it would (or wouldn’t) affect them.
It is great that you are able to separate yourself from your work — not all retirees or near-retirees can do that — but you may also be right that your family is having a hard time redefining you and themselves in this next phase. Your decision will affect them in some capacity, even though it is completely within your right to retire. Maybe when you sit and talk to them, ask them what about your retirement will affect them.
“They need to have a guided discussion around each other’s expectations and what they envision retirement to be,” said Rene Bruer, a certified financial planner and co–chief executive office at Smith Bruer Advisors. “Bottom line, they need to come to an understanding and to make compromises.”
Ultimately, remind them of who you are and why you want to retire. “While his family might understand that the numbers make sense for retirement, they may not feel comfortable that he has an identity beyond his role at work,” said Dennis Morton, a certified financial planner and co-founder of Morton Brown Family Wealth. “I would advise him to set aside the dollars and cents and say to his family, ‘In retirement, I am someone who …’ Then fill in the things that will define his values, how he will spend his time and how he will find purpose.”

Jamaicans shattering the ceilings in Canada’s healthcare system

At age nine, Dionne Sinclair was told by her Jamaican primary school educator, ‘Teacher Thomas’, that she was her “Scholarship Girl”, and that title directed her life throughout her illustrious career in the medical field in Canada.

Sinclair, who has made history by being named vice-president of Complex Care & Recovery & Chief Nursing Executive of Ontario’s largest mental health facility, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), is one of the few black women in Canada’s healthcare system in such a position.

On July 26, she steps into her new position, where she will have 3,000 people reporting to her, while managing a budget of C$92 million.

Making the massive move to CAMH straight out of the Southlake Regional Hospital, Toronto, where she served as Multi-site Director in Diversity and Cultural Advancement, identifying gaps and developing strategies to create more just and equitable workplaces, the Resort, Manchester-born nurse, who holds a master’s in healthcare management, was forced to leave Canadian high school in 10th grade because of her accent; instead, she was told to take up vocational training.

LIFE-CHANGING INFLUENCE

Had it not been for Teacher Thomas’ influence, which spurred Sinclair’s determination, the advice from her Canadian high school guidance counsellor that she was not college or university material would probably have been realised, but scholarship-oriented students are not easily dissuaded, particularly if they are coming from a solid foundation, and Sinclair had that in her favour.

“We were told to get our education in high school, so we, my brother Steve and I, were put in a technical school in London, Ontario, called HB Beale. I went into practical nursing and he did sheet metal work,” Sinclair told The Sunday Gleaner.

Hearing that the only education she could qualify for was high school was something Sinclair said never occurred to her at the time.

“An adult saying I am going to be done in high school and I never had to do any more school, I thought, ‘wow, what a sweet deal’,” she recalled.

The black and Caribbean students were not alone, though. Anyone who didn’t speak ‘English’, such as the Asians, were put into dry cleaning and the Spanish into the hospitality sector so they could change the sheets in the hotels. This was the 1980s in London, Ontario, where Sinclair’s parents moved to from Jamaica.

But, like a true trojan, the five-feet-four-inches tall woman did exceptionally well in the Registered Practical Nursing (RPN) programme, actually topping her class and went further, outpacing her peers in the provincial exam to get her nursing licence, inspiring an unbiased teacher who recommended her to a diploma class at Fanshawe College.

And that was all the encouragement Sinclair needed to become a registered nurse. Of course, the stumbling blocks were not out of her way. She had to tutor herself in 11th, 12th and 13th grade physics, biology and chemistry, because she had only made it to high school.

No easy nut to crack, her tenacity and diligence paid off, and today she quips about the struggle “dissecting the mitochondria (membrane-bound cell organelles that generate most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell’s biochemical reactions) into something, something”.

Entering two years of college at the University of Western Ontario without the requisite subjects, Sinclair still graduated with a 95 per cent average, “because I am Teacher Thomas’ scholarship girl and I could not fail”.

By then she had become a mother of two, and knowing their future was in her hands, she said failure was just not an option. Her parents were their guardian angels and like Jamaican families are renowned for, helped with the kids, while Sinclair was awarded her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
UPWARD MOBILITY

The country girl from the cool hills of Manchester, where today the mangoes fall from the trees during season because there aren’t enough mouths to eat, graduated with her BSc, and immediately decided she couldn’t go back to bedpans in the hospitals.

It has been upward mobility since. She worked in the prison system as head nurse, taking the first institution she handled out of paper into automation. Within a few years, the Ministry of Corrections saw her worth and transferred her to Ottawa to set up an infirmary on a hospital wing inside the jail there.

Slowly, Sinclair became an agent of change in every environment she was placed, and because she was ambitious she couldn’t settle for anything that seemed stagnant. She had climbed the highest ladder in the system as healthcare coordinator and moved on next to the Royal Ottawa Hospital as a supervisor.

Again, she knew what she could bring to the table and in two years in quality improvement, she helped them through successful accreditation. Her next stint was at Humber River Hospital, where she met her mentor, Paula Villafana, director of mental health and addictions at the medical facility.

The rest is history, she said. “Paula saw my potential and she gave me a lot of leadership development, by coaching me and encouraging me when I decided to leave to become a director elsewhere.”

Sinclair moved into the world of directorship and started her first post in this new realm as director of complex care at St Vincent Hospital, where she had 330 beds, and managers and supervisors reporting to her directly.

At age 53, this Jamaican girl has shattered all the ceilings ever hovering over her head.
